Sewing School!
I was very privileged to be invited to a local school recently to run a sewing workshop with a group of Year 10 GCSE Textiles students. FANTASTIC! the next generation of sewing enthusiasts! Whoop, whoop. We decided on the project of a patchwork tote bag, as a good introduction to patchwork and making up skills, resulting in a fabulous item to take home at the end of the day.
This project is quite a big ask to get done in one day by anyone, piecing the squares, making two ruffle strips, manipulating different weights of material, quilting ‘in the ditch’, sewing handles, making a loop, internal pocket, lining the bag and making a fabric covered button, phew! It was going to be a busy day.
I knew that it was going to be a struggle to completely finish the project, but decided to try to get as much done as possible without compromising a quality finish. The students and teachers were a lovely group, who worked so hard, concentrating for long periods with only a short breaks and much reduced lunchtime ( student’s choice!). What a joy to experience such enthusiasm and I was really impressed with the skills they demonstrated and the final results. Here they are:

Jane, how rewarding that must have been both for you and the girls. In these modern times when youngsters seem to be locked into tweeting, texting and glued to their telephones, it is so heartening to see that creative pursuits still have their followers. The most willing student still needs a good teacher to achieve good work so you should give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Thank you for the pictures.
