Appliqued Sewing Garden Tidy

Jane Lightfoot Desi I really enjoyed dreaming up this project for my latest sewing workshop, no need for a humble piece of hessian to be boring when it can be transformed into a useful item! Here we have a Garden Wall Hanging Tidy perfect for housing all your gardening paraphernalia in style!

We started out by making the strips for the pockets this was straight forward enough and helped to ensure the hessian didn’t fray whilst we were working on the design. Next the good bit! planning the applique designs for the pockets and adding any embellishments such as hand embroidery and buttons, all my favourite things, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much.

One of the pockets we decided to allocate to housing the garden string, so we added an eyelet so the string could be threaded through, I used a flower centre for mine but Kim cleverly used the hole in the bird box!

It was a nice project because it could be completed at different levels, from a beginner to a more advanced sewer, the pockets could easily be reversed so the pretty lining was on the outside avoiding the need to free-machine applique, although I’m delighted to say everyone had a really good go at this with lots of success.  I think you will agree that the results were impressive as there was quite a lot of work involved in completing the project at a one day workshop.

After sewing the strips and creating the pockets to the front of the hanging we then lined it, added the eyelets and hey presto ready to hang! All in all a very busy but enjoyable and creative day. Just to let you know we did stop for a delicious home made lunch, which is included in the price of our workshops. Can we tempt you to join us?
